2019 Pingus Subskription

Am 11.06.2020 schrieb uns PETER SISSECK per Mail:

„This letter should have been the happy marking of the 25th vintage of Pingus - If we count that we didn’t make 2002 vintage we can still count hurrah next year… I often say this (Peter and the wolf-like) but this is the most perfect Pingus we have ever made … It only took 25 years!!!!!”

25 Jahre hin oder her, 2019 FLOR DE PINGUS und 2019 PINGUS markieren beide eine Benchmark für PETER SISSECK. Bevor wir in die faszinierenden Details dieser beiden Weine gehen, vorab jedoch, was in PARKERS WINE ADVOCATE zu den 98-100 Punkten des 2019 PINGUS und den sensationellen 94-96 Punkten des 2019 FLOR DE PINGUS steht.  

2019 PINGUS - 98-100 Punkte:
"Tasting a new vintage of Pingus is always a special moment, and there had been some excitement in Spain about the forthcoming 2019 Pingus. In Ribera del Duero, 2019 was a little warmer and lower yielding than 2018, and the wines show it (as they should), but Sisseck remarked how elegant the wines are showing. This ages in used oak, so the wines are a lot less oaky than the initial vintages that forged the Pingus legend—those initial vintages matured in 100% new barrels, and even part of the wine was racked to another new barrel to complete its élevage. But Pingus has been evolved to more elegance and freshness and nowadays uses zero new oak. In fact, since 2018 they have been using 2,000-liter oak vats, something that will continue in future vintages: the wine ages in oak vats first and then in used barrels. Like the 2019 Flor de Pingus, this is super elegant, balanced and really impressive, with a sensual texture. This was a big surprise, because I expected a riper and more powerful wine and instead found lots of elegance. I have to see how the élevage finishes, but this looks truly promising. It has a rare combination of ripeness and lightness. It reminds me a little of the 2012, while the 2018 is more in line with 2016. I also had the chance to taste the wine from vat and from barrique, and the difference was striking: the part in vat was a lot more relaxed, the barrique wine was more compressed and the quality of tannins was also quite different..." 2019 FLOR DE PINGUS - 94-96 Punkte:
"The cask sample of 2019 Flor de Pingus is truly impressive and really shows what Sisseck was talking about: ripeness (more blue fruit), finesse and freshness, with super elegant and round tannins. There is great balance, and it feels very complete. They took the risk to harvest when nobody else was harvesting; I think they made the right decision, but it was not without risk. This is a superb interpretation of the conditions of the 2019 vintage..."   Das Jahr 2019 folgte einem sehr trockenen Winter, PETER SISSECK:
“Our garden around the main house was dry and quite boring. The green winter cover was not there.” Im Frühjahr schließlich regnete es, der Jahrgang an sich jedoch blieb sehr trocken. Die Temperaturen waren bis in den Juli hinein ebenso unter dem Durchschnitt der vorhergehenden Jahre. Mitte Juli gab es leichten Niederschlag, in der Summe aber blieb das Jahr so trocken, dass SISSECK Angst hatte, zu hohe Tannine mit zu hohem Alkoholgehalt zu erhalten. Er entschied sich deshalb, zum Ausgleich mehr Trauben als normal hängen zu lassen. Die sehr tief wurzelnden alten Reben und so SISSECK:
„viel Beten“ halfen PETER letztendlich einen großen Jahrgang einbringen zu können. In der Summe war die erzielte Produktionsmenge deutlich unter der 2018er Ernte. Minus 17% für PINGUS (550 Kisten) und minus 12% für FLOR DE PINGUS (7.283 Kisten) gibt es für den gesamten Weltmarkt und die Nachfrage ist so hoch, dass diese nicht ansatzweise befriedigt werden kann.   2019 FLOR DE PINGUS:
“In the lineup of this year’s wines, Flor de Pingus really stood out. What I would call perfect ripeness is shown in the nose no green hints just delicious ripe fruit. When we get this kind of ripeness it is often associated with a certain heaviness. Not in this case. When one taste the wine it is utterly seamless. No hard etches. Very beautiful long flow in the wine. The 30% New oak is barely noticeable (something i also have seen in Chateau Rocheyron) and just sucked up in the wine. The slight sweetness of the oak just smooth over the wine in a very positive sense.” 2019 PINGUS:
“Year after year when we do our annual tasting Pingus stands out as would be expected. But in the last couple of years much more than ever. I really have no explanation. Is it the the Biodynamics? The vineyard management in general, the age of the vines, the vinification. I cannot mention a single factor. I guess the answer lay in the combination of all. Maybe it is just because we have also matured as “wine” growers. The result is surprising; as good as Flor and PSI are the moment you stick your nose into 2019 Pingus you are lifted to another sphere. It is all about transparency. Crystallinity. The wine is very clean in the nose although a bit closed to start with. But in the glass, it just gains “momento”. Folds out. The texture and the length of the wine is really interesting because it seems so complete. Perfect. Real. True. THE WINE ADVOCATE: "I tasted the bottled 2019 Pingus two weeks after bottling. Even at this early stage and after the operation, the wine is super harmonious and elegant. They really outdid themselves here and produced an amazingly fresh, aromatic and harmonious wine in a warm vintage. It's incredibly textured, with refined, very fine-grained and chalky tannins. It's very balanced, and there's no excess of anything; it has 14% alcohol, perfect ripeness and a velvety mouthfeel. It gets more floral with time in the glass, getting nuanced and really interesting. It delivers what the barrel sample promised one year ago, when the wine already surprised me. I think the word that best describes this wine is precision—it's clean, focused, balanced and delineated. Bravo! 7,900 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2021."
