Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte - Les Hauts de Smith rouge 2016

JAMES SUCKLING: "Fresh currant and cherry aromas with hints of flowers. Full-bodied, very tight and firm with silky tannins and a beautiful, long finish. Lively and vivid. Second wine of Château Smith Haut Lafitte. Mostly merlot with some cabernet sauvignon. Drink after 2022."

WINE ENTHUSIAST: "92–94. Barrel Sample. The second wine produced by the estate , 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, this offering is lightly spicy with juicy red berry fruits. The wine is full of acidity with a crisp aftertaste. It will develop relatively quickly; drink after 2023."

DECANTER: "The grapes are grown on the same plots as for Petit Haut Lafitte but made with majority Merlot, which has taken on weight and depth over ageing and gives an appealing plump feel to the fruits. There's a touch of austerity from the tannins right now, but this is great quality with ageing potential. Drinking Window 2020 - 2030"

WINE SPECTATOR: "This has a solid, juicy core of black currant and blackberry fruit lined with subtle licorice snap and tar notes. Light brambly grip imparts spine, but this is still ready for near-term consumption. Drink now through 2027."
