Chateau Cheval Blanc 2003

JAMES SUCKLING: "This is very fresh and clean. Full bodied and juicy, with loads of fruit starting with strawberry jam and ending with baskets of fresh fruits. This is exotic and crisp, a truly fabulous 2003 with incredible finesse. Pull the cork on this one after 2014. Find the wine"

WINE SPECTATOR: "Blackberry, mineral and lightly toasted oak. Subtle and complex. Full-bodied, with wonderfully sweet fruit character and ultrarefined tannins. Goes on and on. Gorgeous and seductive. Best after 2009. 5,055 cases made."

WEINWISSER: "04: 56 % Merlot, 44 % Cabernet Franc, die Hälfte der Ernte wurde deklassiert: Dunkles Purpur-Granat, lila Rand. Ausladendes, voluminöses Pflaumenbouquet, schöne Cabernet Franc-Würze, Black Currant, fermentierter Tee, Lakritze; weich und anmutig im Ansatz. Im Gaumen ein klassischer Cheval mit einer Kaschmir-Textur, mittlerer Körper, die Gerbstoffe recht fett und rund, wieder viel reife Pflaumennoten, gleicht dem 1985er in einer dichteren und balancierteren Form. Die eigentliche Schönheit überwiegt (noch?) die mögliche Grösse. (18/20). 08: Aufhellendes Granat, dezent oranger Rand. Warmes Cabernetbouquet, Dörrpflaumen, Portschimmer und Malagarosinen, Carmel und sogar Butternoten in der Nase. Im Gaumen cremig, trinkt sich wie ein Weintraum voller Souplesse. Aktuell: 19/20. Gesamtwertung: 18/20. 13: Er stand neben dem wenig entwickelten Angélus. Der Cheval hatte eine wunderschön malzig-süsse Nase, die ersten Cabernet-France-Kräuter kommen zum Vorschein und es schwebt eine Colheita-Duft über dem ganzen Naenbild. Im Gaumen aussen fett, innen mit noch feiner Bitterkeit, welche das Fett mit der Rasse polarisiert. Trotzdem ist eine erste Trinkreife da und er wird als sehr süsser Cheval in seine Geschichte eingehen."

THE WINE ADVOCATE: "The 2003 Cheval Blanc, a blend of 56% Cabernet Franc and 44% Merlot, reveals an exquisite bouquet of mulberries, forest floor, new saddle leather, spice box and spring flowers. The first-growth quality aromatics are followed by a complex medium-bodied wine with more density than anticipated. The wine seems fully mature although there is an unexpected freshness and underlying depth of fruit. This beauty should continue to drink well for another 7-8 years."

JANCIS ROBINSON: "Mid soft garnet. Fragrant with red fruit, just a touch leafy with stony/graphite edge and some undergrowth and sweet spice. Dry and more savoury on the palate though still has nice bright fruit in the middle. Much fresher and more youthful than most. Tannins are dry but the whole still just achieves harmony."

THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "Plummy, pruney and round, with mocha, truffle, nut, coffee bean and blackberry jam aromas. Medium bodied, soft and open, the wine ends with sweet and tart red and black plums. The finish is a bit short."
