Bonneau du Martray - Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2011

FALSTAFF: "Verschlossen, mit etwas Kümmel, kalkmineralischen Noten und gebrannter Mandel (hochwertiges Holz). Am Gaumen ein Ebenmaß von reifer, feingliedriger Säure, seidigem Körper, Geschmeidigkeit und taktil-mineralischem Schliff. Beginnend würzige Abgangsnoten. Großzügig und dabei dezent, wahrlich aristokratisch."

DECANTER: "Magnums usually show more freshness than 75cl bottles and this is no exception. Ample, but with good delineation and polish, the palate reveals itself to be fairly mouth-filling and tender, yet its minerality and salty tang are not far behind. Additional notes of pear tatin, lemon curd and brioche add layers and complexity. This should have a lovely future ahead and drink well for a good number of years considering the vintage."

THE WINE ADVOCATE: "Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Bonneau du Martray’s Corton-Charlemagne 2011 has a mineral-driven bouquet – linear and taut, with slate and granite aromas gradually unfurling in the glass. The palate is clean and fresh with supremely well-judged acidity. Touches of apricot and mango lie in the background with the citrus element playing the main role. Beautifully balanced, this is the Corton-Charlemagne of the flight with impressive tension and persistence."

BURGHOUND: "Even at 11 years of age, the still restrained and wonderfully fresh nose is only now beginning to display good layering along with hints of mandarin orange, apple, pear and white flower. There is good if not excellent underlying tension to the attractively mineral-infused flavors that finish with very good persistence and fine balance. In contrast to the wine in 750 ml (see herein for that note), this is still moderately tightly wound and while it could certainly be enjoyed now, I would be inclined to allow it another 4 to perhaps 7 years due to the large format bottling."

JANCIS ROBINSON: "Flinty, smoky, tart green apple. Voluminous and bold, but doesn't seem as wide-reaching as you might expect. Is this the slow development of a magnum? Lots of length and core concentration, so certainly worth keeping to find out."
