FALSTAFF: "Kräftiges, dunkles Rubingranat, Ockerrand. In der Nase reife, süße Zwetschgenfrucht, Vanille, feines Biskuit, etwas Powidl. Am Gaumen saftig, komplexe Textur, reife Feigenfrucht, opulent, eher dezente Säurestruktur, längst gut antrinkbar, rund und fruchtig, seidige Tannine, bietet großes Trinkvergnügen."

WINE SPECTATOR: "This has entered its secondary phase, with alluring notes of black tea, steeped plum, mulled spice and warm pain d'épices emerging from the core of supple plum, cassis and black cherry fruit. WEINWISSER: "Deutlich aufhellendes Granat, fein oranger Rand. Reifes Bouquet, erdige Süsse, Tabakblattnoten, Wildfleischnuancen, mit dem Luftzutritt fruchtiger werdend, rotes Cassis, defensive Süsse. Saftiger, eleganter Gaumen, aber für den Jahrgang etwas schlank anmutend, tänzerisch und verspielt, aufgrund der Finessen sehr gefällig. Im letzten Drittel der Genussreife."

THE WINE ADVOCATE: "Approaching full maturity, Pichon-Lalande’s1989 has a deep ruby/plum color with some lightening at the edge. The nose offers sweet plums and creme de cassis intermixed with vanilla and graphite. The wine is lush, medium to full-bodied, and layered with texture, low acidity, sweet tannin, and the hallmark purity and elegance this estate routinely produces. Some tannins remain, but this wine has reached its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for another 10-15 years. Anticipated maturity: Now-2017. Last tasted, 5/02."
