Everyone said: “A wine business in Frasdorf? Not possible. Then two brothers came along, not knowing what had been said, and just did it.” 

UNGER WEINE was founded in 1993 by us, the two brothers Michael and Dr. Wulf Unger, wine newcomer and greenhorns looking for a change in our career. Before, our life was all about sports, which certainly gave our parents constantly restless nights. I, Michael Unger preferred skiing and driving cars to school, which unfortunately extended my school presence. After finishing school I continued with an apprenticeship as motor mechanic on Italian luxury brands featuring a bull and a horse in their emblem. Further studies finally made me a manufacturing systems engineer, followed by academic studies in motor mechanics. Finally I had achieved my goal and, in particular, my first contact with the luxury world. At the time we were not even considering to come across this world again later in a whole different setup. Wine was not on the radar at the time; drinking alcohol was frowned upon much in the same way as consuming too many calories or not doing enough sport. After completing my academic studies, a few more years in the automotive world followed before the adventure of UNGER WEINE began.
The story of Dr. Wulf Unger is much the same. The journey education was, by comparison, blessed with a little more luck than that of my brother, but sports – especially skiing – and cars we had same priorities. Time flew by with brewing beer as part of my advanced chemistry course, spending afternoons at lake Chiemsee or up on mount Kampenwand, which was far more preferable to my physical or mental presence at school. I was arguably more focused on my business administration studies and on graduating than Michael, and wanted to save my strength for later. Somehow I finally finished university with an diploma and doctor degree in economics, which should have helped us years later. I then went on to earn my money in the financial markets. At the beginning of the 90s, I wrote an article for the magazine “Börse online”: “Rather Petrus than Daimler shares”, an early indication of what had to come.
Since these days, time has put many things on track and in order, family, spending time with people which really matter and care and enjoying meals together became more and more important alongside with the company. A lot of habits and focus have, however, remained the same, such as the daily sports, our commitment to family, friends, the company and our staff, driving and, right at the top, my brother. Without him, UNGER WEINE would not be the company it is today. The responsibilities have been defined and delineated over the years according to our strengths and inclinations. Our personal contact with suppliers and customers, accompanied by our willingness to travel extensively, has stood out since day one. To live up to our own quality standard, we travel regularly, visiting our import countries and areas such as Bordeaux, Champagne, Burgundy, Italy and California a few times a year. We have spent way more than one year in total traveling just to California. We have gotten to know all our suppliers personally, almost all turned into great friends. Wine for us has not only turned into a business, it is our passion.
