18 RENÈ GABRIEL: "99: Fassprobe (18/20): Verschwenderisches, fast explosives Bouquet; viel rotes Cassis, Rauch- und Kaffeenoten, dahinter Dörrfeigen. Im Gaumen weich, viel Extrakt, fast opulent, langer, konzentrierter Nachhall. 03: Sehr dunkle, tiefe Farbe, feiner Rand aussen. Stark rotbeeriges Cassisbouquet; wirkt elegant im Ansatz. Fein kernige Noten, aufrauhend, gute Konzentration, bereits erste Schokonoten im Finale. Momentan aber nicht mehr ganz so versprechend wie bei der Fassprobe. Wird aber um 2006 die 18/20 wieder erreichen. 10: Noch recht jung und immer noch mit versprechendem Potential, mehr Kraft als Charme. (18/20). 14: Dunkles Weinrot, satt in der Mitte. Dichtes, konzentriertes Bouquet, Cassis und Brombeeren, Lakritze, verführerisch mit einem Hauch Kokos. Im Gaumen stoffig, dunkles Bounty, also wieder Kokos und Pralinen, anhaltendes, schon fast erotisches Finale. Auf sehr gutem Weg und in erster Genussphase. Die Nase liegt locker bei 19/20. Im Gaumen spürt man leider den ziemlich grosszügigen, eventuell gar etwas zu langen Holzausbau in der Adstringenz, dies in Form von «Holzmuskeln», süsses, röstig schmeckendes Finale. Das Holz muss er noch etwas verdauen und wenn er das schafft, dann bekommt er noch einen Punkt mehr. Auf alle Fälle sehr modern vinifiziert." 97 JAMES SUCKLING: "I drank a bottle of 1998 L’Eglise Clinet Pomerol yesterday in Beverly Hills at the Italian restaurant Via Alloro with Hong Kong wine merchant Paulo Pong, who also blogs for my web site. The L’Eglise was still very young and in reserve. We decanted it before drinking, but it still was a little tight. I think it needs more bottle time. Nonetheless, it was soft and silky yet firm and gorgeous. It was full-bodied with a gorgeous core of raspberry and spices on the palate, with chocolate and mahogany notes." 93 WINESPECTATOR: "Big and powerful, with lots of olive, brown sugar and jam. Soft and full, with round tannins. A voluptuous and wild wine. Juicy and exotic. Why wait on this full-throttle red? 100 percent Merlot.—´88/´98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). Drink now." 91 THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "Popped and poured, the aromatics offered flowers, black cherry, chocolate covered raspberry, truffle, licorice and dark chocolate. Soft, round, elegant and most importantly, delicious, the medium bodied wine lacks the depth and concentration found in the top vintages of the estate. It also lacks the high price too. Truthfully, this had a lot of charm on the nose and palate, ending with a hint of dusty earth in the chocolate covered, plum finish. There is no need to hold your bottles any longer as this is fully mature and ready to go."
